Ben McAninch

He was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Big Run, Pa., the son of Clyde Calvin and Marjorie McKee McAninch.

He graduated from Grove City College in 1950 and was employed by Welch Foods Inc. in Westfield for 34 years, retiring in 1987. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, from July 1943 to November 1945. He was a private 1st class, serving as an engine man operator in the headquarters and base service squadron, stationed in Northern Ireland. He was a member of Mayville United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer and assistant youth fellow leader. He volunteered his time to the Lover Run, a service founded by Dewittville-Hartfield United Methodist Church to provide medically related transportation.

Ben's interests included family genealogy, traveling, camping and hiking. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan. His love for his family was the center of his life, and he will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Lois Cox McAninch, whom he married Oct. 10, 1953, in Grove City; two sons: William Reed McAninch of Westfield and Steven Edward McAninch of Mayville; two daughters: Margaret Ann FitzGibbon of Westfield and Barbara Lee Bova of Mayville; seven grandchildren: Andrew McKee FitzGibbon of Elkins, W. Va., Thomas McKee FitzGibbon, Emma Lee McAninch and Carolyn Cox McAninch, all of Westfield, and Steven Thomas McAninch, Jennifer Lee Bova and Kaitlin Mary Bova, all of Mayville; a sister, Betty Florence Burns of Volant, Pa.; and a brother, Donald Lee McAninch of Grove City.

He was preceded in death by an infant son in 1957; a granddaughter, Bridget Ann McAninch in 1994; two brothers: Richard Calvin McAninch and Max David McAninch; and a sister, Margaret Belle McAninch.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mayville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Alan Jones, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mayville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville.
