Gerard was born in Montana, where the family lived for a short time, probably to do with his father's work as a railroad contractor. By 1910 the family had returned to Washington, this time settling in Spokane, where members of the family still live today. Gerard finished high school and began a career in accounting; starting first in the railroad business.
On June 15, 1929 Gerard (whose address is given as Los Altos) married Miss Mary Rice, they went on to have two sons, Robert and Jerome, they lived in San Francisco County. The 1940 Census lists Gerard's profession as an accountant for the telephone company. They rented a home at 151 East 7th Avenue in San Mateo, California for $45 a month; there is now a park at that location.
*Cemetery listings also have Frances Alden buried at this location, possibly she is Gerard and Mary's child.
