William T Brooks, a resident of Haw River for 50 years, died at his home following two months’ illness.
He was born in Wake Forest November 10, 1866, son of Capt. R. H. and Annie Seawell Brooks. For most of his boyhood he lived in Raleigh. He attended Wake Forest college from 1884-1888, coming to Haw River in 1890 as a bookkeeper for the old Holt-Granite mills. He was secretary of Tabardrey Manufacturing Company at the time of his death.
Major Brooks, as he was known for years to his numerous friends, was always a leader in his community and took an active part in its affairs. He was a Mason, a member of the Junior Order and Woodmen of the World; and had been a deacon in the Baptist church for many years.
He was married three times: to Miss Fannie Thompson, of Haw River, who died in 1909, Miss Iola Franklin, of Durham, who died in 1916, and his present wife, who was Miss Ruby Rogers, of Claxton, Ga.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. James W Simpson of Haw River; Mrs. A. L. McGuire, Guilford College; Mrs. Jack P Smith, Mrs. Silas Compion and Mrs. Robert Murphy, of Mebane; Mrs. DeWitt Shelton, of Charlotte; Mrs. John A Payne, Jr., Greensboro; Roger Brooks, of the U.S. Army, Margaret, Wade, and Mary Ellen Brooks, of the home; and a number of grandchildren.
