Mrs. Higgins lived in Indiana for 18 years, where she worked at Foster-Forbes and Owens Illinois glass factories.
She moved to Greene County in 1973, and worked for Magnavox, MECO, and Southern Electronics.
Mrs. Higgins was an apprentice auctioneer for a year; taught clogging at the Music Palace and the Horse Creek Music Barn. She and her husband, the late Albert A. Higgins, led a group of dancers known as "The Horse Creek Cloggers."
She attended First Tabernacle Church of God in Limestone.
Her family states, "She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She will be sadly missed by family and friends alike. She was known by her CB handle "Lady Wagon Wheel."
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include two other daughters: Mrs. Ron (Brenda Sue) Cramer and Mrs. Jim (Pamlan Rose) Auler, both of Marion, Ind.; one son: John Lee Hurd; one stepson: Ralph Higgins of Greeneville; one stepdaughter: Sandra Waddell of Greeneville; 10 grandchildren: Tyila Cooks, Emily Chambers, Dawn Shenefield, Shane Murray, Jaime Ashbrooke Leslie Weitenberner, Jordan Hurd, Racin Cramer, Adam Hurd, and Nicholas Hurd; four stepgrandchildren: Heather Higgins, Nathan Higgins, Andy Waddell, and William Waddell; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister: Della Kate Miller of Greene County; one brother: Millard Childress of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and her former husband: John Hurd Jr. of Indiana.
She was a daughter of the late Nick O. and Martha Ellen Childress and was preceded in death by an infant daughter; three brothers: William "Bill" Childress, Ernest Childress, and an infant; two sisters: Anna Shelton and an infant; and a former husband: Marvin Lee Roberts.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Dale Shelton will officiate.
Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Marcelto Cooks, Dana Brown, Jeff Wietenberner, Christopher Shoemaker, Robert Ashbrooke, and Junior McClennan.
Honorary pallbearers will be her friends and neighbors.
