He was born in Sodertalje, Sweden in 1869, the second son of Magnus Peterson and Clara Sofia Larsdotter. Magnus' wife had died in 1862, but I don't think he ever married Clara. Magnus was a "boat skipper", and he and Clara moved around a lot.
Magnus died in 1874, and I think Clara must have died before that, because both Hjalmar and Emil were living with Clara's sister in Stockholm for 6 months after Magnus' death, at which point they moved to the island of Gotland, where they were taken in by Magnus' brother. Edit- Clara died in 1872.
Hjalmar left for the United States, apparently alone, in 1881,when he was 14, but Emil didnt follow until 1888.
Emil married a woman named Alma Peterson who was 14 years older than he was, and they had no children. They lived for many years at 1044 School Street in Chicago, and Emil worked variously as a janitor and an elevator operator. When I started researching the family's history, Emil was almost forgotten; no one seemed to have ever heard much of anything about him. He died in 1944.
