Homer was the third of eight children born to William Wesley Gilreath and Alice Melvenia Martin Gilreath. He and Naomi L. Jones married April 23, 1928 in Okemah, Oklahoma and raised two children, both of whom survive him.

He spent his working life in construction as a carpenter, for the most part in the oil fields. He enjoyed coon hunting and his dogs. He also played a mean game of dominoes.
