He passed away surrounded by his loving family following a brief and courageous battle with a neurological illness.
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Pat will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 N. Fillmore Street, Davenport. The Reverend Robert H. Harness will be the celebrant of the funeral liturgy.
Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends Monday, February 11, 2013 at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport, from 4 until 7 p.m. There will be a family led rosary at 6:30 p.m. that all are encouraged to join the family and pray.
Patrick McGrath was born February 26, 1935, in Davenport, a son of, Edwin J. and Frances F. (Fay) McGrath. He graduated from the former Davenport High class of 1953. He then attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1958 with a degree in civil engineering. While attending Iowa, he was a member of the Iowa Wrestling Team. He was also proud to serve our country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Pat was united in marriage to Donna Lorraine Ide on December 28, 1957, in Davenport. Donna preceded him in death in 2002.
He retired from the city of Davenport after 37 years of service as a city engineer. He maintained a civil engineering license in both Iowa and Illinois.
Pat's greatest joy in his life was his family. He cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was a talented trumpet player, and had played with many local bands. He and Donna also enjoyed dancing through-out their marriage.
Memorials may be made to Holy Family Church or Kahl Home.
Those left to honor his memory include his children and their spouses, a daughter, Sandra and Greg Hansen, Davenport, and a son, Michael and Sandy McGrath, Marshall, Missouri; his six loving grandchildren, Megan (Andy) Kober, Benjamin Hansen, Helena Hansen, Mallory McGrath, Lauren McGrath, and Zach McGrath; a sister, Ann (Polo) Coronado, Pasco, Washington; a brother-in-law, Jerry Patterson, Davenport; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as his loving companion of several years, Anne Farrell, Davenport.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Donna, he was also preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Kathleen Joanne McGrath, 1964, and his sister, Mary Patterson.
