Jim moved to Chicago Illinois after his service in the Army and married Wanda Adkins of Dameron, West Virgina. They had one child Jimmy Lee. Jim and Wanda and Jimmy lived in Chicago for several years. Jim retired from the Rust Oleum Paint Factory in Evanston, Illinois where he was a security guard. Jim and Wanda moved to Round Lake Park Illinois. After both retired, they moved back to Dry Creek, West Virginia where Jim grew up.
Jim developed lung cancer and had surgery and chemotherapy treatments. He also suffered from throat cancer as well and had surgery to his throat, tongue, and neck. Jim's lung cancer returned and he never recovered. He died in the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, West Virginia.
