William Michie was born at Loangarry, Drumblade Parish, Aberdeenshire. His father was a farmer. He also was a farmer, possibly starting off as an farm servant but in 1841 he was a farm overseer at Gallentown, Forglen Parish, Banffshire. In 1851 and in 1861 he was operating a large farm at Bogharvey, Marnoch Parish, Banffshire. By 1871 he had moved the family to Newton of Turtory, Rothiemay Parish, Banffshire, where he operated a large farm. He lost his wife in 1887. By 1891 he was a retired farmer licing with his daughter Ann and son-in-law Alexander Smith in Huntly.

William died at 10 Meadow Street, Huntly of heart disease. Informant for his death record was Alexander Smith - Grandson, Present. His probated will left and estate just over 399 Pds, naming Rev. James Allan of Marnoch and Peter Morrison of Peterhead executors.
