He was a very generous person, leaving a majority of his estate to the University of Kansas Endowment Fund. HIs remaining property went to help support friends and relatives, including his stepmother Ida (Zimmerman) Bohnstengel's family, who were still in Germany. Walter died at a hospital in Topeka, KS at the age of 67.
