Howard Hugh Munsell, 87 year old Checotah resident, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013 in Muskogee. He was born on Wednesday, December 23, 1925 to Harvey Otto and Mattie Jewell (Neyland) Munsell in Lyton Springs, Texas. He grew up in the Lockhart and Austin Texas area. At the age of 17, he joined The United States Navy in Austin, Texas during the latter part of WWII. He was honorably discharged Tuesday, January 8, 1946 in Corpus Christi, Texas. While still in the Navy, he married the love of his life, Ms. Vera Treadwell on Saturday, February 10, 1945 in Kingsville, TX. They moved to Arizona for a brief time before moving back to Checotah in 1959. Howard worked on dairy farms in both Arizona and Oklahoma. Back in Oklahoma, he went to work at Insulation Services making insulated pipe fittings. He worked construction for a short period before becoming a janitor for Checotah Public Schools and later Connors State College where he retired in 1983. Howard was then able to begin his prison ministry and song writing. He loved to jot down poetic verses, creating beautiful songs and playing his guitar. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Vera on Thursday, May 12, 2011; parents; five brothers; five sisters; oldest son Fred J. Munsell; grandson Shane Munsell and son-in-law Harvey Riggs. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, February 11, 2013 in Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah, with Reverend Kelly Payne officiating.
