Francis L. "Bubba" Leonard, winner of the national amateur boxing title for his weight class in 1941, died Friday May 22, 1992 at his home at 154 Ivy Terrace. He was 69 and the husband of Virginia M. (Broadbent) Leonard. Born and educated in Taunton, he was the son of the late Charles and Catherine (King) Leonard, and lived his entire life in the city. It was in the Boston Garden that Mr. Leonard, then 18, became king of the nation's amateur featherweights, taking the National Amateur Athletic Union featherweight title in the 126-pound class in a bout against Carl Palombo of Amsterdam, NY. He became the first Taunton boxer ever to win a national amateur boxing championship in the 34 years of the AAU. To get there that April night 51 years ago, he had to win three bouts for three consecutive nights. Mr. Leonard, an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of sergeant, was a retired lineman from the Taunton Municipal Light Plant. He left the TMLP in 1976 after 25 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. Surviving are two sons, Francis L. Leonard Jr. of Boca Raton, FL and Jeffrey P. Leonard of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; three daughters, Mrs. John (Carol) Fromhartz of Pompano Beach, FL, Mrs. Anthony (Ann Marie) Ferris of North Dighton, and Mrs. George (Sharon) Wentworth of Ft. Lauderdale; a brother, John Leonard of Taunton; two sisters, Mrs. Clinton (Margaret) Westgate of Taunton, and Mrs. James (Janice) Brindle of Parsippany, NJ; five grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. Funeral will be from the O'Keefe-Wade Funeral Home on Tuesday at 9 a.m. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Donations in his honor may be made to Old Colony Hospice, Raynham.
