Herman "Gene" Gilkey
September 1, 1932 ~ March 26, 2012

On March 26, 2012 Herman "Gene" Gilkey, husband and father went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Herman was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on September 1, 1932, to Benjamin and Alice (Gilkey) Reid. He was raised in Pawhuska, OK where he attended the community's all black school, Booker T. Washington. Herman was a veteran of World War II and proudly served his country. After his tour of duty, he moved to Phoenix, AZ where he met his loving wife Teddie. Together they moved to Arvin, CA, raised their two children and made a life for themselves. Herman worked for Barlow Farms and afterward as an Agricultural Supervisor at Anthony Vineyards and for his dear friend Dominic Bianco for over 45 years. If there was anything to know about grapes or bell peppers, Herman was your man. Herman was preceded in death by his son, Fritz Raynard Roberts; his father, Benjamin Gilkey and four brothers, Benjamin Jr., Alonzo, Fred and Leroy Gilkey. Herman leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 45 years, his precious daughter, Edna Toshiko Roberts; special caregiver, Charlotte Stinnett; siel amigo, Jesse Munoz; his mother, Alice Reid; brothers and sisters, Harry (Sylvia) Gilkey, Charles, Margaret and Francis Gilkey, Dorothy Robinson, Cora Jean Brown and Eddie Mae Daugherty; special niece, Shirley Harris; sister-in-law, Ida Gilkey and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and dear friends. As greatly as Herman will be missed...this is not good-bye, but it's "check you later" as he would often say. Visitation will be held at Arvin Funeral Home, 600 Tucker Street, Arvin, CA from 4 to 8 PM, March 30, 2012 with a Memorial Service at the South Kern Cemetery at 11 AM, March 31, 2012.
