Scottie grew up living with his mother and grandparents in Lexington, Lafayette Co, Missouri.
His father was from England, and involved in coal mining, per the 1910 census.

By 1920, his mother had become an actress, and married to J.R. Wright, a traveling actor. Scottie's sister, Virginia Wright, was born about 1917, married at age 16 to Cecil Thomas and moved to California.

By 1930, at age 20, Scottie was working as a "moving picture agent" while still living with his grandparents.

By the time he registered for the WWII draft in October 1940, he was living in Bakersfield, Kern, California, working as a gas station attendant, and his mother was in Kansas City, Missouri.

He married sometime before entering the Army.

He entered the Army in Aug 1943, served in France in World War II, was injured, and was discharged in Sept 1945.
