Marvis M. Carpenter age 91 of Darlington, WI, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011 at Mineral Point Care Center, Mineral Point, WI.

She was born May 1, 1920 in Apple River Township, IL, the daughter of Wilbert and Floy (Downs) Abraham-Saalsaa.

Marvis graduated from Darlington High School in 1938. She was united in marriage to LaVerne Carpenter on August 28, 1940 at Darlington United Methodist Church in Darlington. Prior to her marriage she worked as an operator for the local Telephone Company. Marvis lived in the Darlington area all of her life. She farmed with her husband in Seymour Township until 1970 when they moved to Darlington Township and farmed until their retirement in 1985. Marvis continued to be active and worked for Benedicts Dry Goods in Darlington for five years.

Marvis is survived by her husband: LaVerne; son-in-law: Jerry Waelti of Delavan, WI; four grandchildren: Lisa (Brian) Fountaine of Dousman, WI, Mark (Yukari) Waelti of Hollywood, CA, Heidi (Scott) Terpstra of Delavan, WI, and Heather (Troy) Heflick of Janesville, WI; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lilas Saalsaa and Marion Olson both of Darlington; and one brother-in-law: Glenn Mummert of Darlington; two sisters-in-law: Arlene (Robert) Hirsbrunner of Wiota, WI, and Shirley (Jerry) Schwartz of Belvidere, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter: Carolyn Waelti; one brother: Howard Abraham; two sisters: Burnett Erickson and Virginia Mummert; and four brothers-in-law: Paul Saalsaa, Ordean Olson, Myron Erickson, and Milford Homb.

Marvis was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Darlington, its Women of ELCA, and quilting group. She was also a member of Darlington Homemakers Club and Darlington Sewing Club. Marvis was an avid gardener, especially flowers. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Grace Lutheran Church, 1302 Clay Street in Darlington, with Rev. Luke S. Smetters of Wiota Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington. A visitation will be held Saturday 10:00 a.m. until time of services at Grace Lutheran Church. Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.
