Prima Donna and Opera Soprano. She was born to Charles and Delilah (Kashow) Charlebois. The name Charlebois was interchanged with Wood (Bois), thus you will find records under both names. The birth date for Sofia comes from one of her many passports. She was the granddaughter of Israel Kashow, an early pioneer of San Francisco and Belvedere Island. Her mother died when she was a young girl, and in his grief, her father committed suicide a short time later. She was then taken in by Israel Kashow and raised by him and his fourth wife, Sophia. She attended San Francisco University, and studied voice and piano at the Frank Damrosch Conservatory in New York. She was playing in musical stock companies in San Francisco when she met Fortune Gallo. They were married in 1912. Sadly, they lost a baby girl in December 1912, when she was stillborn. Sofia traveled with Fortune and the opera company, doing shows in Europe as well as in the United States. She died aboard the S.S. Saturnia in 1948. She was survived by her husband, Fortune, of New York, as well as an uncle, Thorn Kashow, of San Francisco.
