Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away surrounded by family on November 1, 2012.
Jay was born April 4, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Benjamin Halvor Harker and Marian Elizabeth Ostler.
He attended East High School where he excelled in track and field. He served in the Brazilian South Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He later attended the University of Utah where he earned a Bachelors Degree in History and Political Science.
He furthered his education by earning a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Utah and a Masters of Hospital Administration from BYU.
Jay was a veteran of the Vietnam Era and served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers.
Jay Married Diann Rogers on June 8, 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He worked for Holy Cross Hospital as Director of the Social Work Department. He also worked for LDS Social Services as a counselor.
For the last fifteen years he worked at the University of Utah as an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work. Jay loved his work. He loved teaching and he loved his fellow coworkers. Jay had a lifelong circle of friends. He loved spending time with his family while at home or on vacation. He enjoyed reading and studying history and kept current with political and world events.
He enjoyed photography, camping, skiing and golf.
He was active and held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Assistant Scout Leader being one of his favorites.
Jay loved spending time with his grandchildren and honoring family traditions.
He is survived by his wife, Diann Harker; children, Stacy (Kory) Brinkerhoff, Scott (Angela) Harker, David (Judith) Harker, and Richard Harker; brothers, Benjamin (Mercy) Harker, Steven (Merlene) Harker; and grandchildren, Sarah, Gary, James and Austin Brinkerhoff.
Preceded in death by father, Hal Harker; mother, Marian Harker Shelton; stepfather, George Edgar Shelton; and baby brother, John Charles Harker.
Funeral services will be on Monday, November 5, 2012, 12 Noon, at the East Mill Creek 6th Ward, 3103 East Craig Drive (3600 South). The family will receive visitors on Sunday evening from 6 - 8 PM at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, and again Monday one hour prior to the services. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
