WINSTON-SALEM - Don Gray Angell, Sr., a loving husband, father and terrific grandfather, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born August 2, 1939 in Yadkin County to the late Conrad and Delia Williams Angell. Don graduated from Campbell College and the Dallas School of Mortuary Science. He always said he would have never graduated without the support of his one true love, Vera Dixon Carter. They were married in 1960 and spent 52 adventurous years together. Don was a lover of life. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was a devoted community volunteer. He was a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Clemmons for 19 years, serving as President. He received a distinguished award during this time. He also combined his love of politics and of older citizens by serving the American Health Care Association as Vice-President and the North Carolina Health Care Association as President. Professionally, Don was an entrepreneur and a visionary through and through. In 1967 he co-founded Angell-Long Funeral Home in Boonville, N.C and never looked back. He was the founding partner of Angell Care Long Term Health Care and in 1984, opened Bermuda Village Retirement Community. Later in his career, he developed City Hall South and the Wingate Inn as well as other hotel properties. He often expressed his gratitude and amazement that he was surrounded by wonderfully dedicated and talented people who supported him in the creation of his business visions. Don is survived by his wife, Vera Angell, daughter Shawn Angell, son Gray Angell and daughter-in-law Christie Angell, granddaughter Nicole Angell and grandson Stephen Angell. He is also survived by cousins and extended family members whom he cherished. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. J.B. Whitfield officiating. Visitation with the family will follow at the church. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church, 4720 Siloam Road, East Bend, N.C. following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association, Raleigh, N.C., the Clemmons Rotary Club or to Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104.
