Ella was the daughter of Artemis Knowlton and Maria Hill. She married Arthur Knowlton on 31 Mar 1875 in Clinton, Iowa. They were the parents of Florence, Sheldon, Herbert, Arthur, Daniel Joseph, Ruth, Oral A, and Albert.

April 9, 1908 - Carroll Times - Mrs. Arthur Knowlton of Carroll township, who has been in frail health for years, died at her home southwest of Maple River last Thursday. She had been about the house as late as Wednesday evening, erysipelas being the immediate cause of her death.

Departed was born Oct. 15, 1855, at East Douglas, Mass. She was married March 31, 1875, to Arthur Knowlton at Clinton, Iowa, and they have lived in Carroll township since 1877.

She is survived by her husband and eight children, five sons and three daughters, all of whom were present at the funeral. There are also two sisters to mourn her and two grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the M.E. church of this city and was largely attended by the numerous friends and neighbors of the family who came to show their respect to the dead and extend their sympathy to the living. Departed was a devoted wife and mother, a good kind and obliging neighbor, a sincere Christian, whom all who knew her loved and whose early death is signally deplored by all. May He Who called her home from earthly pains to a life of radiant happiness, soothe the bereaved ones in their irreparable loss.
