Born Nov. 10, 1929, in Milton, she was the daughter of George J. and Madge (Pierce) Brown. She had attended Milton High School. In 1972, she received her GED from Spaulding High School.
She was first married to Bernard Elmer, and they later divorced. In 1973, she married Philip George, and they always resided in Barre City. He died March 17, 1998, at their home.
Gracie had worked as a waitress at the former Venetian Restaurant in Barre and later for Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice.
She enjoyed bowling at the Twin City Lanes and was longtime president of the mixed bowling league and liked to take part in activities at the Senior Citizens Center and playing bingo. The annual family summer outing at North Hero on Lake Champlain was her favorite time.
Her memberships include St. Monica Parish, Brown Johnson VFW Post Auxiliary in Montpelier, The Ladies of the Canadian Club, the Women's International Bowling Congress and the Barre Area Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sharon Burke, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Rebecca Lamay, of Ocean Springs, Miss., and three sons, Bernard Elmer Jr. and his wife, Kitty, of Glencoe, Mo., Stephen Elmer and his wife, Carey, of Charlotte, and Brian Elmer, of Greenville, S.C., as well as 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her two sisters, Doris and Pearl, and two brothers, Herman and Clyde.
Her service of remembrance will be held Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre.
There are no calling hours. Later interment will be made in the Village Cemetery in Williamstown.

SOUTH BARRE - The service of remembrance and life celebration for Grace Mae "Gracie" George, of Cedar Place Apartments on Route 14, was held Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. She died Jan. 29, 2013, at her home.
The Rev. Leopold Bilodeau, pastor of St. Monica Catholic Church, led the service. Words of remembrance were offered by her daughters, Sharon Burke and Rebecca Lamay, and son Stephen Elmer. Several members of the congregation also spoke.
Cheyenne Deltoro read a letter of farewell written by longtime and best friend Denise Roberts. Son Stephen Elmer read the Scripture lesson, and Father Bilodeau led the congregation in the hymns, "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."
The honorary bearers were her sons, Stephen, Brian and Bernard Elmer Jr., nephew James Massie and grandnephew Lonnie Hutchins.
Later interment will be made in the Village Cemetery in Williamstown.
Fellowship and luncheon followed at the Hilltop Restaurant in Barre Town.
