Biography by Dorleen KRAUSE —

Johann Friedrich KRAUSE born on the 23rd of May 1896 in Tarutino, Akkerman, Bessarabia, South Russia was the son of Ferdinand KRAUSE and Justine BIERWAG.

Johann (John) Krause was thrown into a Russian prison by the Communists for a period of three months for speaking German, possibly while attending classes in Odessa.

About 1920 he migrated to Germany to study agriculture and veterinary pursuits. John was also interested in the classics and poetry. In December of 1923 he left Germany by way of the Port of Hamburg, immigrating to Canada and arrived in Hilda in 1924. He enjoyed being a salesman, and traveled about for some years selling knives and other commodities.

He met Helene HAMMEL in Hilda, Alberta. They were married in Wetaskiwin on February 17, 1928. John was renting a farm in the Ponoka area, and by 1929 they had purchased a farm.

Five of the children of John and Helene were born in Ponoka. They moved to Chilliwack (Rosedale area), British Columbia in the spring of 1944. Raimund, the sixth child was born there.
