Obituary

Paul Moritz Marschalk of Bristol, Tennessee made his final flight west January 31, 2013 with a peaceful and smooth takeoff. He fought a brave fight with Alzheimer's disease and was sweet and loving to the end. Paul was a wonderful man and a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Born to Paul Maurice Marschalk and Yvonne Derby Marschalk on March 4, 1939 in Pierre, South Dakota. After earning his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Minnesota in 1962, Paul entered the Air Force where he was an officer and pilot for 7 years. Paul ended his Air Force career in November 1969 with the rank of Captain after a tour in the Vietnam war with the Air Commando 609th Special Operations Squadron, "Nimrod" as an A-26 attack bomber pilot with 155 night missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. On March 19, 1969, Paul was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by order of the President of the United States for heroism while participating in aerial flight.

In July 1970, Paul was hired as a pilot for Pacific Southwest Airlines, which in 1988 merged with US Airways. Paul was a Captain and retired from US Airways in 1999 after 29 years service with the airlines.

Paul loved to fly and was a pilot for over 50 years with more than 21,000 flight hours. He was an Air Force pilot, a commercial pilot, a certified flight instructor and qualified to fly 27 different aircraft. He started his flying career in propeller aircraft, flew both propeller aircraft and jets in the Air Force and with the airlines. In his retirement years, Paul enjoyed flying his own 1940 Boeing Stearman bi-plane.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert William Marschalk and his first wife Therese Todd Marschalk. He is survived by his wife and soul-mate, Sue King-Marschalk, daughter Elizabeth Marschalk Feric (Ante), grandchildren Paul M. Feric and AnnaMaria T. Feric, nieces Kathryn Marschalk, Madyson Davison and Eva Marschalk, nephew Alex Marschalk (Julie), sister-in-law Kay Marschalk, sister-in-law Elizabeth Ruppert (Frank) and nieces Liz Ruppert and Claire Ruppert.

Interment February 26, 2013 with military honors and a fly-over at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, California.

To honor Paul's life and your memories of him, please do something nice for someone. It would make Paul smile.

Distinguished Flying Cross

Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Paul M. Marschalk, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an A-26 Attack Aircraft Pilot in Southeast Asia on 19 March 1969. Despite his exposure to intense gunfire from multiple anti-aircraft artillery positions, Captain Marschalk made repeated low altitude strikes against a hostile truck convoy. By his fortitude, tenacious courage and aerial skill, he successfully struck at night, in rugged terrain, and destroyed four hostile trucks and their cargoes and damaged another. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Marschalk reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
