Lafayette was born on December 14, 1846 in Vermont to Allen Sweet and Fanny M. Taft. He enlisted in the military on August 4, 1862. He fought in the civil war for the Union in the Company B, 1st Regiment, Vermont Heavy Artillery. When he left the military on June 24, 1865, he was a corporal. He married Anna Mary Dobbins on December 31, 1867 in Whiting, Addison, Vermont. He passed away on December 11, 1914.
