Obituary - Suffolk County News (Sayville), Friday, March 05, 1937, Page: 4 - Herman Hilker, who was born in Brooklyn 67 years ago last September 18th and had been a resident of Sayville for more than 20 years died at his home on Colton Avenue at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. He had been in ill health since last June, suffering from a heart ailment and its complication and had been confined to his room and most of the time to his bed since January 11th when he went to business for the last time. For the past four days he had been in a semi-comatose condition.

Mr. Hilker for about 40 years held a responsible position with the white goods firm of Sherman & Sons in New York and in that time acquired a remarkable knowledge of cotton textiles. Many years ago, he developed a valuable side line for his firm who were pioneers in the importation of the very fine and perfect weaves necessary to the manufacture of typewriter ribbons and his expert knowledge of that specialty entitled him to be known as the dean of the industry. When his concern went to the wall in the crash seven or eight years ago, Mr. Hilker formed a partnership under the name of Hilker-Townsend Company to continue the importation and sale of typewriter ribbons and the fabrics of which they are made.

Mr. and Mrs. Hilker first came to Sayville to spend the summer 22 years ago and the following year decided to make their permanent home here. the deceased was a genial, companionable man and had many friends. He was a life member of the Marsh Lodge of the Masonic Order in Brooklyn and was especially interested in affairs of the Sayville Fire Department, having served as Fire Commissioner here since October 24, 1924. He was a lifelong member of the Republican party and had been a treasurer of the Sayville Republican Club for ten years. Mr Hilker possessed a particularly fine bass voice and loved to sing and for many years sang in church choirs and at many amateur entertainments for the benefit of local organizations. Except his wife and step-daughter Miss Amy Hilker he leaves no relatives. His remains are lying at the Raynor Memorial Chapel and the funeral services are to be held Sunday at 3 pm from Emanuel Episcopal Church, Great River, where prior to his illness he had for a long time been a regular attendant. The interment will take place on Monday at 10:30 in the Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn.
