WINNEBAGO - Vernon L. Bowman, 83, of Winnebago, died Saturday evening, March 10, 2001, in Rosewood Care Center of Rockford. Born Sept. 9, 1917, in Alworth, son of Lester N. and Alice G. (Oakes) Bowman. Graduated from Winnebago High School, Class of 1935. After graduation, he started working at L.N. Bowman Elevator and Mill, Alworth, becoming president in 1965 and retiring in 1987. The business bought and sold grain, feed, fertilizer and fuel. He also sold and serviced furnaces and stokers. Married Ruth Elizabeth Berglund on March 14, 1941, in First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago, where he was a member since 1931, served as trustee for six years and helped start Mariners in 1942. Charter member of Winnebago Lions Club with his father, Lester. Joined Winnebago Masonic Lodge 745 in 1946. He was a volunteer fireman for Win-Bur-Sew Fire Department for 50 years, serving as treasurer and trustee for 16 years. President of Winnebago School Board, secretary of Winnebago Business and Professional Men's Association and a Young Republican. Member of Illinois Grain & Feed Dealers Association, National Association of Liquid Fertilizer Manufactures and secretary/treasurer of Illinois Fuel Dealers Association. Helped start Winnebago Couples Card Club in 1942. During retirement, he volunteered at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Survivors include wife, Ruth son, John (Jan) Bowman of Rockford daughter, Karen Rowden of Thiensville, Wis. grandchildren James Rowden and John (Shelly) Rowden, both of Milwaukee, Wis., Kristi Bowman of Durham, N.C., and Ryan Bowman of Peoria sister, Helen (Merle) Clark, formerly of Winnebago and several nephews and nieces. Predeceased by parents and grandson, Chad Bowman, on Jan. 7, 1976.

Services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St./Winnebago Road, with the Rev. Steve P. Shullanberger, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Winnebago, officiating. Burial in Winnebago Cemetery. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 12, in the funeral home, with Masonic service at 8 p.m. by Winnebago Masonic Lodge 745. A memorial will be established for Win-Bur-Sew Fire Department.
