Adocia was born in March of 1838 in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana to Henry & Elizabeth (Dale) Walden. Granddaughter of John Henry (Kidd) Walden & Mary Collins. She married William Arch Merritt 14 September 1856 in Putnam County, Indiana at the age of 18. From their union they had 9 children with 8 living to adulthood.

Josie & William first born was George E in 1857 Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana. She, William & George set out on a wagon train headed west the spring of 1858 & settled in Dry Creek Twp., Maries County, Missouri with her husband’s cousin Alexander Hatten living with them. They returned to Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana in the summer & is the same year their second child is born Scrilda E "Rilda" in 1862 Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana.

After the Civil War William returned home to Adocia in Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana. Two more children were born; Ann E "Ida" 1866 & Missouri Ella "Ellen" 1868 before embarking Westward. In the spring of 1869 they moved to Kansas where William worked as a farmhand for Jacob Van Brunt. In 1870 He & Josie are residence of Pottawatomie, Pottawatomie County, Kansas having two more children; Edward C 1871 & William Arch Jr Merritt 1874 who were born on Mr Van Brunt land. In 1875 Josie & William are living in Westmoreland, Rock Creek Twp., Pottawatomie County, Kansas on their own land. They purchased 80 acres in Rock Creek Twp., Pottawatomie County, Kansas on 20 Feb 1875. There they had two more children; Joseph Henry 1876 & an infant daughter in 1879.79.

They lived in Westmoreland, Rock Creek Twp., Pottawatomie County in the summer of 1880; embarking back East to Indiana after there census was taken. They made it to the main Railroad Hub in Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas, but before leaving by train Adocia delivered their 9th child in Leavenworth. She had a son, James Newton that was born that November of 1880. They returned to Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana more than likely before the end of the year in 1880, before winter set in. In 1889 they moved to West Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana; they were boarders at 644 Ohio Street. In 1890 her husband William is listed with no employment & a resident of Macksville, Vigo County, Indiana. They owned $155.00 of taxable property in Sugar Creek Township, Macksville, Vigo County, Indiana. Josie filed for widows pension on 17 December 1897.

Terre Haute Tribune - Saturday, Dec 23, 1911 - Mrs Adosha Merritt; West Terre Haute. The Funeral of Mrs Adosha Merritt, who died Thursday Evening, will be held from the late residence, 419 Rigg Avenue Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, burial in Bethesda Cemetery. Mrs Merritt lived in West Terre Haute for the past twenty-two years moving here from Putnam County. Mrs Merritt was 73 years of age and leaves to mourn her eight children. They are: George, Edward, William, Joseph and James; Mrs Rilda Walden, Mrs Ida Whitehead and Mrs Ellen Walden all of West Terre Haute, One sister survives, Mrs Ruth Turner of Putnam County.
