William (or Willem) Langerak came from Holland on the ship Maastrom along with his parents, Hendrick and Maria, in April 1847, landing in Baltimore in June.

William Langerak was 18, and living in Pella, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov 11, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861. He became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 12, 1863. He mustered out of the service on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta with the rest of his company.

Among his other duties while serving in the cavalry, he carried mail by horseback, and contracted an illness that eventually contributed to his death.

After the War, he married Jana Rietveld on Nov 2, 1865.

Langerak applied for his Civil War pension in 1896. His application is #1,176,195, and his certificate #959,000. After his death, his wife applied for her widow's pension on April 26, 1917. Her application is #1,100,393, and her certificate #838,449.
