Born Elisabetha Genz on April 1, 1829, in the village of Beberstedt, Mühlhausen district, Province of Saxony, Prussia (today known as Beberstedt, in the community of Dingelstädt, Eichsfeld district (but until 2023 was in Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis), State of Thüringen, Germany).

Elizabeth's parents were Joachim Genz (c.1792-1831) and Maria Catharina Schollmeyer (c.1794-c.1850) both of Beberstedt.

Among her siblings who also immigrated to America from Germany (Prussia) are:
Conrad Genz (1827-1891) of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, proprietor of Galena Hotel
Joseph Genz, listed as a brother in Conrad Genz's obituary; details besides lived in Galena are unknown

Elizabeth's mother had remarried in 1834 to a Nikolaus Ziegenfuss and gave Elizabeth a half-sister:
Clara Ziegenfuss (1837-1925), who immigrated with her father and married John George Rogge in Wisconsin before they eventually settled in Paxico, Kansas.
