Death came to John Henry Meenen to relieve him of an illness which he had endured for more than a year. His death brought sorrow to those who knew him, but it removed him from a life which he no longer enjoyed.
John was one of four boys and a girl born to Friedrich and Johanna Meenen, who came to this country in 1884. Born near Oldenburg, Germany, May 25, 1876, he completed his life here June 23, 1942 at the age of 66 years and 29 days.
He was only eight years old when he came to this country. Since that time most of his life was spent in the Riverdale community where he was a member of the German Lutheran church during its existence.
John Meenen and Bertha Benninga were united in marriage February 26, 1908. To this union were born three children, a daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Morey and two sons, Friedrich and Henry.
His was a quiet nature. He was unable to do much work during his declining years, so spent his time reading and watching others. He had a simple philosophy of living. He said never to hurry because a person can only do so much, so he should life each day as full as possible.
Besides his daughter, two sons and three grandchildren, he is survived by two brothers, Ludolph and Fritz H. Meenen of Clifton, and one sister Mrs. Edward Gerriets (Albertha) of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha, who passed away August1, 1941.
