Friedrich Heinrich and his wife Johanna imigrated to the United States in 1884. They settled south of the river in Mulberry township, Clay County, Kansas. They first lived in a sod house, later moving into a cabin on land purchased on the river bottom. This land was very similar to the farm, Belmshelm where Friedrich had grown up. Friedrich became ill with the fatal pneumonia after getting caught in a blizzard returning home from visiting relatives in Nebraska. Johanna was left to care for the six children and manage the farm.
