Oregon Pioneer of 1847
Tolbert Carter made the difficult trip from Illinois across the Oregon Trail to Benton County, Oregon, along with his brother, "Smiley" (1827-1881). They arrived in early 1847. Tolbert had been born in Morgan County, Illinois in 1825, a son of John A and Catherine (Barnett) Carter, both of whom died in 1842. He was one of nine children. Following their immigration to Oregon Tolbert settled on a donation land claim near the future settlement of Wells, in Benton County. He met and then married Martha Angelina Belieu on August 30th, 1850. They settled in the small community of Soap Creek in Benton County where he had a donation land claim (DLC#4925). They went on to have eight children, all born in Oregon:
Clara, b.1852, James Elvin, b.1853,John, b.1855, Henry (Harry) E., b.1857, Mary E., b.1859, Perry A., b.1861, Eliza Ella, b.1862, and Virgil Anson, b.1870.
Tolbert, his wife and children farmed their land and he and his wife lived there the remainder of their days. In addition to farming, Tolbert served as a Justice of the Peace from 1852 to 1854. He went on to be elected to the Oregon Legislature in 1878 and reelected in 1882. Tolbert and Martha lost their son, Henry, to death in 1885. Tolbert was still serving as a Senator for both Benton and Lincoln counties when he contracted pneumonia and passed from this life on Oct 3rd, 1899 having lived a long life of 74 years. He is interred at Palestine Cemetery in Benton County, Oregon. His dear wife outlived him by nearly 38 years, passing away on their donation land claim in February of 1937. She is buried next to him, by his side in death as she was in life. May they rest peacefully in Paradise for Eternity.
