Oregon Pioneer of 1846
James Fletcher Crabtree was b. Feb 12, 1838 in Lee County, Virginia. His parents, Dela (Delroy) Fletcher Crabtree and Pheba [Flanary] Crabtree also hailed from Virginia. In 1846, the extended Crabtree family immigrated to the Oregon Territory via the Oregon Trail, arriving in Autumn, 1846, and settling in the Willamette Valley. The town of Crabtree is named after Delroy Fletcher Crabtree. James Fletcher Crabtree wed Mary Ann Powell in Linn County on Feb 18, 1881, even though James was much older than Mary Ann. They had been blessed with 7 children as of the 1900 census when James was 62 and Mary was 40. They had one last child in 1901. They had been renting a farm in the Syracuse district in Linn County in 1900, but in 1910, were on a farm 5 miles NW of Albany, across the Willamette River, in Fairmount district of Benton County.
Their children were: Sonora Augusta, b. Mar 1882, Orlan Lee, b. Feb 1883, James Monroe, b. Jan 1886, Grover Cleveland, b. Jun 1888, Mary Bell, b. Feb 1890, (Myrtle) Phebe, b. Dec 1892, Iva May, b. Jan 1897 and William B., born in 1901. Sadly, James died of skin cell carcinoma on the left side of his face, on May 25th, 1912, according to his death certificate. He was just a couple of months past his 65th birthday, but by then he had been diagnosed with the cancer for about two years and it had taken most of the left side of his face. I don't know how long it was since he had been able to farm his land, which probably depressed him, in addition to the pain involved. He died on his farm, 5 miles North of Albany, across the Willamette River in Benton County, the land he had lived on and loved, and in the area where he had, with his loving wife, Mary Ann, raised their children. His grieving wife laid him to rest at the Palestine Cemetery, which is also in Benton County. Three years later, Mary Ann passed away while living with her daughter, Iva May, in Monmouth. She had been diagnosed with carcinoma of the biliary tract (bile ducts connecting to liver thru the pancreas) and died on the 4th of July 1923. Mary Ann was buried next to her beloved husband at Palestine Cemetery, Benton Co., Oregon. May they Rest in Peace where there are no diseases.
