“Letter: from Joseph Bruff to Anna M. Bruff, July 23rd 1863 – ½ past 9 P.M.
Location: Louisville Ky
Summary: Describes travel south and visits with family and friends.

Dear Anna
I arrived here about 1 Ocl this afternoon and will have to lay over until 8 Ocl tomorrow morning. I am not getting along very fast as I stoped in Columbus from 11 to 3.25 and at Cincinnati layed over from 9 Ocl in the evening until 5 P M next day[.] We got to Butlerville about ½ past 8 and I stopped off till 9 this morning when I started on and arrived here as above[.] I was so unfortunate as not to find Emmor at home he had started that evening to Cincinnati, we met about 15 miles from Butlerville I payed Lizzie a little visit and saw the youngsters, the youngest is a real keen looking boy, so is Bruff. Emmor is right well fixed, and doing a pretty good busine∫s I guess. “

Here is how I identified the Wares. This is most likely Emmor Ware (1831-1886)(Michigan, Deaths, 1867-1950, Ancestry.com), whose family joined the Upper Springfield MM (Mahoning County, Ohio) in 1851 (Hinshaw, 1946b, p. 1012). Bruff and Emmor were probably boyhood friends as they were close in age. Emmor Ware, 29, grocer, his wife Elizabeth, 24, and a baby named Joseph Bruff Ware were present in the 1860 Federal Census for Campbell Twp., Jennings Co., Indiana, p. o. Butlerville. Another son, Ezra, was born in 1862 (1880 Federal Census for Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan). Emmor served for 30 days in 1862 as a wagoner in the 9th Indiana Legion (U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865, Ancestry.com).
