D'Amour served with the 11th Bombardment Group, 431st Bombardment Squadron. On September 12, 1942 he was a gunner aboard B-17E #41-2404 flying out of New Hebrides. The plane lost an engine, had navigation problems and had to ditch in the ocean when it ran out of fuel. The nine men had to squeeze into a four man life raft and survive on two swallows of water and a small piece of chocolate a day. Three times they had to fend off sharks. After six days D'Amour and another crewman died from exposure. Eventually the rest of the men were rescued.
Because his body was not recovered, D'Amour's name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing. He received the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
