Henry Brown, Sr., father of Henry and Edwin Brown and Mrs. Mary Hagan and Mrs. Ennis Elliott, died Wednesday morning, the funeral services being held yesterday at the Friends' church, conducted by Rev. Abbie Lake. They were attended by a large number of neighbors who held the deceased in high esteem He was an old settler, a veteran of the civil war, and a man of good life. His wife preceded him about a year ago.

For years the deceased has been very infirm from old age, being at the last almost blind and to add to his decrepitude he recently suffered a stroke of paralysis, which rendered him almost helpless. While to many it seems that it were better to pass away before extreme old age comes, on, with all its infirmities, and many who have reached such years anxiously wait for the summons, yet old ago is not without its advantages and its pleasures. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were spared to each other until they had finished life's work. They were given a half century or more of wedded life—of mutual helpfulness. Together they were permitted to enjoy the realization of substantially all their plans and hopes—were permitted to see their children grow into excellent manhood and womanhood, to be given grandchildren to love—to add good cheer to their lives, and so the world and Providence was kind to them, as they are to most old people, even though an occasional sorrow has crept into chasten and make the blessings seem even greater.

Henry Brown was born in England September 13, 1833, died January 13, 1909, at the home of his son, Edwin Brown, in his 77th year. He was baptized in the Church of England when a boy and lived in that faith. He came to America when 18 years of age. He was married to Faith Norton in 1854, who preceded him in death. To them eleven children were born, only four surviving—Henry and Edwin and Mrs. Mary Hagan and Mrs. Jessie Elliott. He was the grandfather of 28 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He enlisted in the civil war in 1861 in company H. 93, Illinois Infantry and served three years and ten months. He came to Carroll county in 1882 and was a well to do farmer and admirable neighbor and citizen.
