APPALACHIA, Va. - Walter Williams, born June 16, 1919, went to be with the Lord at the age of 84 on Saturday (Aug. 23, 2003) at Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, Va.
A lifelong resident of Appalachia, he was a World War II veteran and a retired coal miner. He was a member of UMWA Local 1405, District 20.
He was a deacon of "The Church" in Appalachia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene L. Williams; son, Walter J. Williams Jr.; granddaughter, Regena L. Williams; parents, Joe and Sarah Williams; four brothers, Jesse, Creed, Balard and Ray Williams; and two sisters, Pearlie Mullins and Dora Holbrook.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janis Pattie and Eddie Gollaway, Appalachia; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Brenda Williams, Appalachia; brother, Howard Williams, Appalachia; grandchildren, Keith and wife Laura Gollaway, Travis Gollaway, Joyce and husband Scotty Palmer, all of Appalachia, Cantinia and husband Roy Coomer, Lisa Jo and husband Chris Blair, of Big Stone Gap, Va., Cindy Tipton, Reidsville, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren, Caleb Johnson, Vania Williams-Palmer, Breania Palmer, Kendria Blanken, Kristanne Blanken, Reva Coomer, RC Coomer, Richie Tipton, Faith Tipton, Christopher Blair Jr.; several nieces, nephews, and a host of church family, friends, and neighbors.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Duke Barker officiating.
Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
