Memorial services for J.W. Hughes, 69, were conducted Sunday, January 10, 1988 at 2:00 in the afternoon in the Eleventh Street Baptist of Shamrock. Rev. Mike Heady, pastor, assisted by Rev. M.B. Smith, Baptist minister of Pampa, officiated. Burial was in Shamrock Cemetery by Richerson Funeral Home. Pallbearers were J.D. Clay, Ed Campbell, Jr., Don Troxell, Gary Clemens, all of Shamrock, K.D. Ford and Dwayne Ford, both of Wheeler. Mr. Hughes died Friday in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo. Born May 13, 1918, in Erick, Oklahoma he lived in Center Community in Wheeler County more than 30 years. In 1932 he moved to Fluvanna and in 1952 he moved to Shamrock. J.W. Hughes and Ruby Reaves were married in 1938 in Snyder. She died in 1972. He married Elsie Cox in 1982 in Wheeler. He owned and operated a help yourself laundry a number of years, located at the site of the Video Shop on East Third in Shamrock. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Elsie of the home, 201 South Arkansas; two daughters: Beverly Haws of Shamrock, Sherron Forrester of Austin; two sons: J.L. Hughes of Midland and Frank Hughes of Amarillo; six sisters: Pauline Scott of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ruth Hutchins of Pampa, Joyce MacDonald of Temple, Jo MacDonald, Janice Collier and Jean Thompson, all of Snyder; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

According to the Social Security death index, his last residence was in Shamrock, Wheeler, Texas, USA. The Texas death index reflects he died in Potter, Texas, USA.
