He was born Gerben Porte in March 1871 in the country village of Hallum, in the extreme northern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of the 22 years aged laborer Jacob Gerbens Porte and Trijntje Klazes Krol, both born in Hallum too, and who married in March 1870 in municipality Ferwerderadeel.

On April 7, 1890 Germen Porte (18 years old, farmer) arrived alone, without relatives on the S.S. Rotterdam at the port of New York, Castle Garden. His sisters Antje (21) and Jultje (17) arrived on November 3, 1890 on also the S.S. Rotterdam, heading for the Dutch settlement Roseland, since 1892 a southern district of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. On May 7, 1891 his father Jacob Porte (40, laborer), mother Trijntje (42), brothers Klaas (11), Jochem (9) and Folkert (4) arrived on the S.S. Spaarndam at New York.

Gerben Porte married on 22 August 1893 in Cook County, Illinois, very probably in Chicago, at the age of 22 years the four years younger Sara Gross, born in the extreme northern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland too.

On July 13, 1894 Germer Porter and Sarah Gross had in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois daughter Annie Porter.

On October 21, 1895 Gerben Porter was naturalized by a court in Cook County, very probably in Chicago, Illinois.
