FAYETTEVILLE-Mrs. Leona Hazel Payne, 76, of Route 1, died Monday, Jan. 20, in a Oak Hill hospital, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 22, 1915, at Graydon, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Ruth Walker Pennington.
Mrs. Payne was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Higginbotham in 1984.
Survivors include her husband, Lacy Payne of Scarbro; a son, Lewis Higginbotham Jr. of Route 1, Fayetteville; a stepson, Wilson Payne of Scarbro; three daughters, Elizabeth Boos of Oak Hill, Charlotte Chittum and Thelma Workman, both of Route 1, Fayetteville; a stepdaughter, Sandra Compton of Scarbro; two brothers, Albert Pennington of Danese and Arthur Pennington of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Asley Eary of Fayetteville and Elsie Syner of Lansing; 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carlos Perry officiating. Burial will follow in the Bibb Cemetery, Route 1, Fayetteville.
Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
