Joseph Preston Turnidge was the seventh child born to Vincent and Amanda Turnidge.

On March 4, 1973 Joseph's wife, Nellie, wrote a letter to Helen Turnidge Stover. Here is an excerpt from that letter:

"her Simpsons came from Port Huron Mich., to Sheridan, Ore., in the fall of 1907. My father bought a farm near the Vincent Jasper Turnidge family and after a while "Joe" (Joseph Preston Turnidge) and I were going out together. My father was a dairyman in Mich., but he was not making as good financially in Oregon. That bothered him. My mother was happy in Oregon on less money, with 5 daughters and another one born in Oregon. She was so glad to have our family privacy, in place of a bunch of hired men around that the dairy business called for. But in the fall of 1908, my father sold out and we went back to Michigan. Joe went with us to San Francisco, but from then on it was letters for us for 3 years. Then Joe came east and we were married in Port Huron, St. Clair Co., Michigan 4th Dec., 1912."

Helen Turnidge Stover kept this letter, and years later shared it with a very dedicated Turnidge family genealogist, Cathy Turnage. About 2005 Cathy shared it with Michelle Turnidge Shreve, a descendant of William and Alfretta Turnidge.
