Sara Calhoun Smithy Caldwell, 71, died peacefully at her home in Berryville, Virginia, May 2, 2010, under the care of Blue Ridge Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care, after a long illness.

"Sally" was born in Charleston, South Carolina on November 6, 1938, to Sara Rankin Smithy of Charleston and Dr. Horace Gilbert Smithy, Jr., a pioneering cardiac surgeon. She was the grand-daughter of Rosalie McCormick Smithy and Horace G. Smithy of Berryville and Washington, D.C., and grew up spending summers in Berryville at the McCormick family home, Rose Hill. She moved to Berryville from Charleston permanently in 1980.

Mrs. Caldwell was active at Grace Episcopal Church, the Republican Women's Club, the Barns of Rose Hill, and as a recreation aide at Godfrey House in Berryville.

In 1992, she married Henry Hanson Caldwell, formerly of Illinois, a retired circuit court judge and deputy attorney general of that state. Their favorite pastime was to enjoy tea at the Ritz-Carlton in Tyson's Corner, Virginia on Sunday afternoons. They had five very happy years together before his death in 1997. (An earlier marriage ended in divorce.)

Survivors include her sister, Rosalie Smithy Bradham of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, her step-children Richard Taylor Caldwell of Edenton, North Carolina, Georgia Caldwell DuBose of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Anita Caldwell Pierce of Barrington, Illinois, Carey Stirling Caldwell of Mt. Prospect, Illinois and Kevin Fredrick Caldwell of Barrington, Illinois, nephews Horace Smithy McIntosh of Raleigh, North Carolina and William Ball Tallman, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; and step-grandchildren Kendra A. Dale and John-Henry M. Dale of Portland, Oregon and Christina Pierce Bauernfreund of Barrington, Illinois.

There will be a memorial Eucharist for Mrs. Caldwell at Grace Episcopal Church, Berryville, Virginia on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with The Rev. Canon Dwight L. Brown officiating.

A reception in the parish hall will follow. Her lady friends are invited to wear their favorite hat in her memory.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Episcopal Church organ restoration fund, 110 N. Church St., Berryville, VA 22611, to the Barns of Rose Hill, P. O. Box 738, Berryville, VA 22611, or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601. (Mrs. Bradham and the Rev. Mrs. DuBose offer their profound gratitude to Home Instead Senior Care and to Hospice for their compassionate care during Mrs. Caldwell's last illness.)
