Nobility. Born the eldest son of Thierry I and Sibylle d'Anjou. He married Elisabeth of Vermandois in 1156 and succeeded in her right as Count of Vermandois in 1167. In the following year he also succeeded his father as Count of Flanders. In 1183 he married Mafalda of Portugal. He died in Acre during the third crusade and was buried there at St Nicolas church. His widow had his remains later transferred to Clairvaux.
