Nancy Irene Kenney (known as "Irene" or "Nin" to her family and friends) was born in Missouri in 1913, the youngest child of John Anderson Hooper and Amanda Elizabeth Snow. Her mother died from complications of childbirth just a couple of months after she was born, and she was raised in Springfield by her aunt, Deniza (Hooper) McDaniel and uncle, Drury McDaniel.

Irene and her husband, Lee Kenney, were married for over 60 years, until his death in 1995. They had a son, Arthur, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Barbara (William) Miller. Irene also had 6 grandchildren and she and Lee helped raise their 2 oldest granddaughters. Although most of her family eventually left Springfield and relocated to Washington state and Ohio, Irene loved to keep in touch with them via letters, visits, and phone calls.

Irene passed away in Springfield on January 19, 2013, just 3 months and a few days shy of her 100th birthday. She is remembered fondly for her fiesty personality and loving spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Arthur; her husband, Lee; her daughter, Barbara; 4 brothers; and a sister. She is survived by her 6 grandchildren: Rebecca (Marvin) Chandler of Hamilton, OH; Ginny (Dan) Tillinghast of Gig Harbor, WA; Janice (Tim) Volker of Grapeview, WA; Betty Miller of Spanaway, WA; Dean Miller of Tacoma, WA; and Charles Miller of Spanaway, WA; 17 great-grandchildren; at least 16 great-great grandchildren; and various distant and extended family members and friends.
