Jeremiah Cox was born in the spring of 1789 in Washington County, Maryland during George Washington's first term as President. In the fall of that year, when Jeremiah was about six months old, the family moved to Kentucky, where Jeremiah grew up, married (twice), and began raising a rather large family that eventually grew to 13 children. Jeremiah Cox first appears in primary source documents in the 1811 tax listings for Grayson County, Kentucky, and can be traced continuously for the next 52 years. He remained in Kentucky until 1829, when he and his second wife, Margaret Yates, moved their family to the Jacksonville Area in Morgan County, Illinois, where they spent the rest of their lives.
