Nazi female camp guard and first Nazi war criminal to be extradited from the United States.

Joined the Nazi party in 1938 and became a female guard at the Majdanek concentration camp and the Ravensbrück concentration camp.

Arrested in 1945 and later released in 1948.

Married an American named Russell Ryan, she later moved to America and became a citizen in 1963.

They lived in Maspeth, Queens, where she was known as a fastidious housewife and friendly neighbor.

Simon Wiesenthal tracked her down in New York and had reporter Joseph Lelyveld find her.

After being located, she was deported in 1973 to Germany where she was placed in prison for life.

Released in 1996 following a leg amputation from diabates.

Hermine Ryan nee Braunsteiner passed away in 1999.Hermine (Braunsteiner) Ryan was one of the infamous women SS guards. She applied for this position because she needed money, unlike some of the other women SS guards.

It was in August of 1939 that she went to work at Ravensbruck Women's camp under the guidance of a very brutal maria Mendel.
Apparently the two did not get along and because of an "altercation" with Mendel, Braunsteiner was transferred to Majdenek concentration camp in October of 1942.

Braunsteiner was known in the camp for her angry outbursts. She personally selected women and children to the gas chambers and even whipped and stopped many of them to death with her leather studded boots. This action earned her the nickname "The Stomping Mare."

She was tried and convicted of many horrible crimses against humanity(at Ravensbruck only--nothing is noted about her behavior at Maidanek camp). She received 3 years sentence.

She later married Russell Ryan and moved to America. She became an American citizen. However this would not keep others from noting who she was.
Simon Wiesenthal a famous Nazi hunter found Hermine. And unlike her nature in Germany camps, she was noted by neighbors as quiet and friendly lady. Yet, she was extradited back to Germany and was to stand trial for war crimes. She was inprisoned in Dusseldorf German for the rest of her life(or so it was to be), but in 1996, she was released due to ill health and upon her released, Ms. Ryan entered the same nursing home her beloved husband was residing (Bochum-Linden). She died there.
