Alden "Joe" Ankenbauer, 86, of Bismarck, died Jan. 17, 2013, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, in Bismarck North Dakota.

Alden was born May 29, 1926, on the family farm west of Kenmare, ND, the son of Earl and Edith (Dollahon) Ankenbauer. He was raised on the family farm and attended country school in the area.

Alden married Carol Dickerson on September 7, 1948, in Kenmare, ND. Alden was drafted into the Army in 1953 to the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was awarded the National Defense Service medal, Korean Service medal, United Nations Service medal and a Good Conduct medal.

He worked in the Ankenbauer Coal Mine for a time, worked as a Lineman for 30 years for MDU (Montana Dakota Utility) (power company) and farmed until 1986.

Alden enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, watching old western movies, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of VFW Post#7049.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, his children, Jeffery, Lori, David, Mari and 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Robert, and John, also his sisters, Margaret and Shirley.

Alden was preceded in death by his parents; Earl and Edith his brothers, Richard, Berlin, Foster, and Forest; his sisters, Doreen Bushey and Mary Berney; brothers-in-law, Harold Schletty, Loyd Berney, Rupert Jones and Don Duff; and sisters-in-law, Harriet Briggle and Joy Ankenbauer; and a very special dog, Tracy.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck. Burial was in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan ND.
