Nathan was born to Joseph and Rachel (Beals) Thornburg. His parents were Quakers, but Nathan does not seem to have stayed with the Society of Friends himself. On 11th mo 14, 1833 he married Hannah Johnson at Lynn meetinghouse under the care of Cherry Grove Friends meeting. She seems to have died since Nathan married in Randolph County, IN, 16 May 1839 to Eleanor Neal. They would be the parents of six children.
