He was born in Germany in 1866 and as a boy came to America with his parents who located on a farm in Rockland. After moving to Brillion, Mr. Behnke was employed as a laborer for eighteen years, then opened a store which he conducted twenty-three years, but retired eight years ago when his son, Melvin assumed control. He was always interested in civic affairs and served twelve years as a member of the Brillion fire department. His wife passed on some years ago. He was known as a man of scrupulous honesty and friendly disposition.
Surviving him are two sons, Ernest who conducts the Brillion Monument Works, and Melvin conducting the general store here. There are three brothers, William of Brillion and Charles of Reedsville, and two sisters, Mrs. Wilhelmina Piepenbrug of Rantoul and Mrs. Augusta Karrow of Marshfield. There are also two step-brothers, Rudolph and Adolph, two step-sisters, Mrs. Caroline Wunsch and Mrs. Anna Bessert, all of Rockland.
Funeral services were held here on Wednesday at the Lutheran church, Rev. Martin Sauer officiating.
