Aso served along with his son, John Wesley Garren, during the Civil War, Confederate Army. He was shot and killed on the Old Federal Road in Monroe, Co., TN during his CSA service. Old Federal Road was built through the Cherokee Nation by the US government in order to facilitate their access to the Creek Indians with whom they were at war in the early 1800s. The Cherokee were also hostile to the Creek at the time. After being shot he was carried to the home of his sister, Susan Garren Patterson, where he died. When Leander enlisted for the war as a Confederate, he gave an incorrect age as he was actually older than those required to serve.
