OBITUARY - Daily News-Record, Harrisonburg (VA) - March 8, 2010
Eugene "Gene" Martz, formerly of Dayton, passed away at the home of his son, Jerry Martz, in Nokesville, Saturday, March 6, 2010. He was born March 19, 1926, near Mount Solon to James Arthur and Viola Daggy Martz.
He attended local schools and North River High School. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the North River area.
In 1944, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. New York in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. After moving to the Woodbridge area of Northern Virginia, Gene worked as a painter and was in the Virginia National Guard for a number of years. He also was a custodian until retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dortha Jean Caricofe Martz. They were married on March 20, 1950.
He is survived by three sons and their wives, Ronald Wilson and Bonnie Martz, James Franklin and Benita Martz, and Jerry Wayne and Ruth Martz. Three grandchildren, Jacob W. Martz, Tiffany Marie Martz, Kimberly Ann Fetters and husband, Derik, also survive him.
Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater with the Rev. Bill Garber officiating. Interment will follow in the Clover Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
